Proper way to use the workout app in Microsoft Band

Hi everybody,
Just got my new Band and I love it. Much better than other wearables I had or tried recently.

Something in not sure of:
In guided workouts, the band seems to separate the active seconds from the recovery seconds (kind of like a built in counter to calculate how much you need to rest between each exercise).

Do I need to do the same when using free style workouts? I.e. pause my Band every time I pause between exercises also in the free style workout?
