    Greetings wc :)
I really want to upgrade w8.1 to w10 tp (through windows updater), but I'm a poor student and only have one computer that i need everyday. So do i lose any data or applications if i update and do all applications work? My python and c programming software must work. And how about steam games?

W10 is a technical preview. It is not recommended to put a technical preview on your only laptop or computer. There are still bugs and drivers missing for W10 and yes there is every possibility of software not working.

I'm sure someone will come along and tell you everything is fine. So I'll put it to you this way. Up to you, just keep in mind things can go wrong.

Since it looks like your things are mission critical and cant wait for downtime, don't install the 10 Technical Preview.

Probably will work A-OK, but its probably too high of a risk.
