I have a Microsoft Account set up on the PC and on the phone and I have set up the Outlook Hotmail Connector function but the phone doesn't seem to pull the contacts and calendar through. The Microsoft Account Settings on the phone shows a 'Content to sync' checkbox for Email but not contacts or Calendar. Does this matter and how do I fix it?
Do I need to use a live.com or Outlook.com email address for the Microsoft Account? (I don't at the moment, I just use my normal email address).
Going round in circles and getting stuck!

1 You do not need to use a outlook.com or live.com email address for a Microsoft Account.
2 in the Microsoft account on your phone you only see the e-mail box because the calendar, contacts are automatically synced so you can not disable this. Only for your e-mail you can decide to sync or not to sync.
3 Now i am not sure what email you use for the outlook 2012 if this is the same as you use for the phone and pc the calendar and contacts should be synced. I you use a live.com or a outlook.com address for it then you could at this outlook.com/live.com account as separate "outlook account" on your phone (So not as a Microsoft Account because you only can use 1 Microsoft account on your phone)
4 If you use a live or outlook.com for outlook 2010 you also could use this as Microsoft Account.
5 I do not know what "the Outlook Hotmail Connector function" is but point 3 or 4 should cover this.

I hope this makes it a little bit clear.

I differ with Harrie's answer and I will explain why.

When you say Microsoft Account on the phone this has to be your Hotmail, live or outlook.com address. A MS account on your phone is required to use the store and get apps, OneDrive, find my phone. When I say MS account I mean one of these, nothing else. When you go there on your PC they will be live.com addresses, it all gets redirected.

This account gives you the source for email, contacts, calendar and OneDrive that everything on your phone will sync to.

Your PC should be changed to this account for sign in. This is what the metro apps will use for calendar, contacts and email. The PC Outlook has your normal email account on it. This is not part of your MS account, it is separate, the contacts and calendar. The Hotmail connector, setup with your MS account, will add another inbox, calendar and contact list from your MS account to your PC Outlook.

Set up MS account How do I sign up for a Microsoft account? - Windows Help
This will be the email address for the phone. When you setup the account there will be a security section. There will be a place for an email address and a phone number. For the phone number use your phone and for the email use your normal email address. Make sure you enter the birthdate information correctly. Write your password down, never forget or lose it.

Setup your MS account, go to it and see what is there, menu is the dots on the top left. http://email.live.com

You will have to reset your phone to enter this MS account. If you want your normal email account on the phone this has to be done afterwards.
Getting your contacts in your MS account and on the phone is another chapter. Contacts you want on the phone, where are they now?

I am subscribed to this thread if you have any questions

    @ T Moore.

Indeed you need to have a MS Account to get all the services etc but...

What I tried to say and thought was the OP's question, was that if you create a Microsoft account you do not need to use an email which ends on @outlook.com. My Microsoft account ends on @kpnplanet.nl and it works without a problem.

I used the @kpnplanet.nl because that was the email i already used and did not want to have another e-mail.
So on my @kpnplanet.nl MS account I have a calendar, contacts etc but no e-mail.

But anyway thanks for clarifying it.

    I understand how yours works.
I wanted the OP to understand how these devices can work together, the phone and the Win8 PC, using the MS account.

On your PC Outlook 2010 you should have it setup with your normal email account.
You said you setup the Hotmail connector function. If you did not add your normal account to it all is go to continue.
So things don't get confusing make sure there is only one account setup on Outlook 2010.
Go to 'File'(at top left), info, account settings, click the small box that opens up. You should see one account listed, your normal email account.

    Now add your MS account.
a.In Outlook, click Info on the File menu, and then click Add Account.
b.Click Manually configure server settings or additional server types, and then click Next.
c.Click Other, click Microsoft Outlook Hotmail Connector, and then click Next.
d.Enter your name, email address, and password, and then click OK.
e.When the confirmation dialog appears, click Finish.

Copy your Outlook calendar to your MS account calendar in Outlook 2010.
    2841578.jpg

Right-click your main Outlook calendar and then click Copy Calendar.
In the Copy Folder window, scroll to find your Microsoft email account.
Click on the email account to select and then click OK

    2841579.jpg

The contacts from your normal email account are copied to the MS account in the same way

When you use calendars in 2010 Outlook view always have the Outlook and the MS account calendar selected. You will be viewing an overlay of both calendars and any calendar entry will be entered on both. Your Outlook2010 calendar is not synced. You have to have both in view to get the calendar entry on your phone.

When you select sync all folders on Outlook 2010 this syncs contacts, calendar from 2010 to your online MS account. When you go to email on your phone and select sync, at the bottom, your phone is synced to the email, contacts and calendar at your online MS account, live.com

Thanks Guys, really grateful for the help.
I am a bit slow here!

Where I am trying to get to is:
    1. have my 'normal' business email on the PC and just the calendar and contacts associated with this (so that calendar invites appear in the usual calendar etc.).
    2. have these emails, contacts and calendar synced on the phone.
    3. if possible avoid multiple calendars and contacts etc.

    Where I am at now:
    a. I have removed all email addresses from the PC Outlook except for my one main 'business' email address.
    b. I have installed the Microsoft Outlook Hotmail Connector.
    c. I have added the MS Account to the phone - but it is the MS Account with the username that is my normal 'business' email address.
    d. I can do a Factory Reset (done once already!) and add the new MS Account if necessary?

When you say "your name, email address, and password" I am getting a bit lost as to whether this is my normal 'business' email or the MS Account username.

So do I need to set up a Hotmail, live or outlook.com address for my MS Account and use that for the PC (which is Windows7 by the way) and for the phone (or is there one allocated already as part of the MS Account I already have)?
If I do need to set up a Hotmail, live or outlook.com address then I guess I do this by just starting afresh and choosing a brand-new live.com or outlook.com email address to use as my username for a brand new Microsoft account?

As I say, sorry to be a bit slow!
    And thanks again.

There is an account entry on the phone listed as a MS account. When you say Microsoft Account on the phone this has to be your Hotmail, live or outlook.com address. What you entered in that space is not a MS account. Do not refer to your business account as a MS account, even though you entered it that way.. Leads to your confusion and others.

Where I am trying to get to is:
    1. have my 'normal' business email on the PC and just the calendar and contacts associated with this (so that calendar invites appear in the usual calendar etc.).
    2. have these emails, contacts and calendar synced on the phone.
They are there on the phone because you have added this as an account on the phone.
    3. if possible avoid multiple calendars and contacts etc.
In other accounts added to the phone you will have a choice if you want to sync email, contacts and calendar to the phone

Yes, reset the phone and when the phone restarts add your new Microsoft account. to the phone. I know you want to enter your normal email account to the phone. Go to settings, email+accounts, tap the + by 'add an account' to enter this account.

When you say "your name, email address, and password" I am getting a bit lost as to whether this is my normal 'business' email or the MS Account username.
This is for the adding your new MS account to Outlook. The name is just that, what Outlook will call you. the email address and password is your new MS account email address, and password. You already have your business account on Outlook.

So do I need to set up a Hotmail, live or outlook.com address for my MS Account and use that for the PC (which is Windows7 by the way) and for the phone (or is there one allocated already as part of the MS Account I already have)?
Win7 does not have a setup for MS account. That is only entered as another account on Outlook 2010. The last part of the question is getting a little weird. When you say "the MS Account I already have". WE have been talking about setting up a MS account for the phone and referring to it as a new MS account. Now you say the MS account you already have. Do you already have a MS account or are you talking about the new one we have been referring to?
If you already have a personal MS account you can use it for the phone,

If I do need to set up a Hotmail, live or outlook.com address then I guess I do this by just starting afresh and choosing a brand-new live.com or outlook.com email address to use as my username for a brand new Microsoft account?
If you already have a MS account, use it. The account is for all of your MS devices. If you ever get a Win8 tablet that will be the account you set it up with.
As I say, sorry to be a bit slow!
    And thanks again.

In the question you asked above about "if possible avoid multiple calendars and contacts etc." on the phone
This needs more explanation. What I described as checkboxes to check for email, contacts and calendar for other accounts applies to accounts added that have these features, like google.
When you add your business email account to the phone all you are going to get is business email. Your business calendar and contacts will come form your MS account on Outlook 2010.
You will have two accounts on Outlook 2010, MS and business. You will copy your business calendar and contacts in Outlook, as described above, to your MS account you added with the Hotmail connector.

The contact list will remain separate between business and your MS account. The contacts will appear on your phone from your MS account and you can add to, delete, change contacts and their information separately from the business contact list in Outlook. This info comes from your MS account online that Outlook will sync to.

The calendar you copy to your MS account in Outlook will be the MS account calendar on the phone. It gets there the same way. It will be a shared calendar between the phone and Outlook. They will stay in sync.

So, you will not be looking at multiple lists and calendars.

Wanted to explain this to see if that is what you want.
