What is the best laptop that I can buy for $500?

So a colleague of mine wants to buy his first laptop. He says he's willing to spend $500 on it. What's the best one that he can buy?

The only requirement he wants is that he wants it to be at least 13'. He's using it to use Office and he thinks that anything smaller is too little.

It doesn't need to come from the Microsoft Store, since I can remove the junk myself. I'd also prefer it be from a more well known brand, or at least someone who gives decent hardware support.

I think it depends on whats the focus here.

I personally would probably spring for an couple years old/refurbished then-high-end Dell Latitude or Lenovo ThinkPad if solidity and no-nonsense is a focus. (but serious gaming? well...)

Today's lower-midrange laptops are something I'm on the fence about, in general I'd get last week's high-end over today's low-end but the Lumia 520 and Moto G kind of upset that rule in recent years.

You've got to be fast with slickdeals with a high rating. Laptops come up all the time.

You can get a good laptop for less than $500 if all you want to do is run Office. Any Core i processor with 4GB RAM would run that fine.
