Why can't I see my old msg?

Hello guys, so I want to go through my old msg's with one of my friend on whatsapp but as soon as i go to a specific date, my screen turns off and gets me off the app and turns black for a few seconds and then I'll have to go again and do the same exact thing all over again, and same problem happens! so could anyone tell me why is that happening? And is there is any way I could get them back? Please because they are really important!!

Something has gone wrong inside WhatsApp I think.

I would restart the phone first and try again. Beyond that, I'm not sure personally.
