Headphones only require 3 poles for audio. Left, Right, and ground. There is an additional pole for mic, which is mono, not stereo, so only 4 poles total.

A 5th pole would only serve for video out, and is not supported.

While a number of Apple products have a 5 pole connector, the extra poles are soldered together and not actually used, such as in the iPod.

EDIT: Okay, I suppose a 5th pole would be for a talk switch. Is that correct? I have yet to get a headphone with a talk switch work on any Lumias that I have owned, and am not sure that it is supported. There is no mention of support for it in any of the Lumia documentation I have been able to find.

I have a pretty high-end noise cancelling wired headset that I use at times, but it is only 4 pole. It does utilize batteries and has it's own noise cancelling circuitry, however. Never had one with 5 poles for that.
