950XL & 550 - Advice about firmware updating

I have just ordered a 950XL for myself and x2 550's for the kids (O2 - UK).

I have read about Windows 10 mobile being 'buggy'.
What is the suggested first thing to-do regarding the firmware when I get them?
Check for updates and let them install until the phones are reporting they are up to date? or leave them as they are depending on what versions they are on?

Welcome your family to latest Windows phones. Its better to install any updates available for your phone. At the same time, you might read about other features and "Technical Preview" on phones, its better to leave the "Technical Preview" away if you are not that techy person who can risk to debug the phone software if anything goes wrong.
