Phone overheats when charging

When I put my phone in to charge, it tends to heat up and stay quite warm through the charging process. When it reaches 100%, it cools back down again. Is this normal? I use the original charging cable that came with the phone.

while charging, is internet on? Something happening in the background?

Chintan: In this situation, my Wi-Fi was on, cell data was off, and only a few processes running in the background, which I allow regularly (phone, messages, phone update). In general, this happens whenever I plug it in to charge.
