Programs will not answer after last update of Windows 10 Home Edition

[Windows Central Question]

After the last update of Windows 10 (Home Edition), most of the installed software on my computer fails to respond, both starting and closing. I can hear the hard disk mostly chewing. Not even Windows own apps will run.
