No sound coming out of external speakers/headphones

[Windows Central Question]

On my HP ProBook 450 G2 which is running Windows 10 Pro with 3.88 GB of usable memory out of 4 GB with a 64 bit operating system --- regardless of it being speakers, headphones, etc., any device plugged into the headphones jack will not play sound through it. I can get sound through the laptop speakers when there is nothing plugged in, obviously. (I have downloaded the newest drivers for my hardware that are available.)
How can I fix this problem?

You've checked for OS updates?
Disabling the drivers and enabling them?
