Am new here and I would be grateful if I could be helped to update my Microsoft Lumia 540 from windows 8.1 to Windows 10

Try installing that app that's recommended to see if your update is available. There's lots of information at that site.

• first do a backup of your data just in case
• Go to store, download upgrade advisor app
• Install it and follow instructions
• After update, check for OS updates again
• Check for store app update followed by app updates for all other apps
• Restart and change settings as you like

Points to note:

• have at least 2GB free space, 3 if you can
• Use wifi and keep phone on charge
• Give the phone a couple of days to settle down after the update
