the phone icon has gone from the home screen on my nokia Lumia. how can it be restored?

Hi, you haven't mentioned what phone or OS it is running.
However on a Windows 10 mobile phone, swipe to the apps list and go down to Phone.
Hold down the phone app until 'pin to start' appears.

Swipe left to all your apps. Search Phone and pin it to your start screen. Hope that helps.
