We like the 30A stretch of beaches, aka the Emerald Coast, between Destin and Panama City. Clean, sugar white sandy beaches and not as crowded as Destin. I can't say much about sights to see. We mostly just hang out on the beach.

Starting in Fort Walton Beach, going towards Panama City:

Santa Rosa BLVD and Hwy 98 at Okaloosa Island (near Ft. Walton Beach) is nice for a casual walk along the beach...pretty peaceful
Heading East just over the Hwy 98 Bridge on Right is the Emerald Grande and behind it is HarborWalk...nice place to dilly dally.
Still heading east: Night life Coyote Ugly Saloon, and next to it is AJ's (AJ's is where the locals go, nice nightlife).
A little further east is Harbor Docks (nice place for lunch)
Still heading east: Sandpiper Cove Golf Course, fo r a game of golf.
Still heading east: Hwy 98 and 293 is Destin Commons, a great place to shop.
Still heading east: SANDESTION, pass through the guard shack, just past the tennis courts are some shops (another place to Dilly Dally)
Still heading east: Donut hole, good place for breakfast.
Still heading east: take 30A, welcome to the easy life:) Seaside, Seagrove Beach, Seacrest, Aly's Beach, Rosemary Beach.
Still heading east: Get back on Hwy 98 (nice restaurant at the merge "Shades"), cross the bridge, get back on Hwy 30 (Front Beach Rd).
Still heading east: Pier Park Mall on left about 6 miles down, good place to walk around and grab a bit.
Still heading east: Get back on Front Beach Road, about 5 miles down turn Right on Thomas Drive, follow for about 3 miles, to Schooners - get there early to get a seat over looking the Gulf and watch the sunset, while enjoying a cocktail:)

All the way over to Pensacola and Santa Rosa Island is a beautiful beach and drive. My favorite two beaches for family is Destin and Pensacola. For rowdy fun, Panama City Beach. Enjoy the journey. I lived in Atlanta for over 20 years and wore out the roads to Florida Gold Coast and Myrtle Beach in SC.

Stop in Venice and get a "sand shovel" which is a mesh basket on a long handle. Wade out to where the waves are breaking. Dip in and get a good basket full of sand... Swish it around in the water to flush out all the sand. Dump the remains on the beach and sort through it for shark's teeth.

Venice, FL is famous for this.
