Apologies in advance. I don't use this computer much so I don't know much about it.

It's an Asus desktop, we've had it a couple years. It's running Windows 10.

My daughter was playing a game on it, and suddenly the screen went funny (light gray and a bunch of what looked like tiny circles). I said, no problem, we'll just restart.

Problem is, I can't get it to restart. I get as far as the Asus logo, then a black screen with the fan running very loudly as if it's doing something, but heaven knows what.

Here's the weird part. I keep reading that what I should do is turn the computer off and back on three times, and that on the third time it'll go into the recovery environment.

But that's not what happens. Instead, on the *2nd* off/on, a message says "Automatic Repair" and it launches... Windows Defender.

Which quick-scans the computer, doesn't even seem to finish scanning -- just flickers out of the Windows Defender screen -- and then restarts the computer. And the computer goes back to logo-black screen.

I'm completely at a loss. Is this computer just done, or what?
