I've been using a surface 3 for a couple of years now and I've come to realise that there's something that is missing

When I want to type, I'll use the surface cover that came with the surface 3 -the keyboard is mostly okay but it has to be attached for it to work

Why can't the surface cover/keyboard work when it's not connected to the surface 3?

Say for example I'm using Instagram and I use it in portrait mode - and I want to comment something - I have to attach the keyboard back, turn it around, type my comment, and then remove it and go back to using in portrait mode
It would make a lot more sense for us to be able to use the keyboard attached or not attached

I'm not sure which technology would be used though - maybe Bluetooth or wireless

Does a Bluetooth keyboard need batteries? Or a wireless one?

    What do you think?

In a nutshell, cost and complexity.

This used to be a thing actually: Microsoft quietly discontinues Surface Wireless Keyboard Adapter | ZDNet

Also, any wireless keyboard, whether using a proprietary protocol or Bluetooth needs batteries.
