I feel there's a lot of disparateness. I also think it comes down to options, because although they share a lot in common, they have varying differences. It's be beautiful anyway to bring the best of the two into one.

I doubt it.

GroupMe has got groups down, and Skype is more calling. I feel trying to integrate the two will be more of a trainwreck than Microsoft's attempt to integrate Skype and SMS.
