Suddenly I cannot access my photos or the app store on my hp pavillion laptop

I know the Pavillion is ancient, but I keep it to store all of my photos on for ease of access and it's free....
So, the icons are completely dead. I tried to get into the photos by just clicking a photo and got the following error:

"the object invoked has disconnected from it's clients"

I was going to try and find another photo app in the app store, but the app store is completely dead.

Any advice?
*I'm currently running a scan to see if any virus is involved....
