How long do ya'll think a Surface Book 2 (i7, 13.5", 8GB RAM, 256GB) will last without slowing down a whole lot? I'm looking for a computer to last about 4-5 years with light-ish Adobe use, and daily multitasking across Excel, Word, Chrome, RStudio, and Acrobat.

    Any help is appreciated!

Performance over time usually depends on software loadout and whatnot, and assuming nothing goes wrong with Windows or what you have running, it should be fine.

However, the Surface Book 2 is very difficult to repair and any hardware fault that is not covered by warranty will be very expensive to repair. (Although let’s be real, we’re talking replacement)

If you don’t mind not being able to replace the battery when it wears out, make upgrades or replace other major components aside from the base, then it should be fine. The Surface lineup is very well-made, I’ll give them that and plenty of people have old computers still kicking with original parts.

Yesterday I pulled an 8 year old Toshiba laptop with 4GB Ram and a 2.2Ghz Celeron processor out of the cupboard and fired it up. It originally came with Windows 7. Back in 2015 I updated it to Windows 10 then put it away and forgot about it.

It's taken 24 hours to update to the latest version of Windows 10.

    It's running like a dream.

In fact, it's running better than my Surface Pro 3.

And my Surface Pro 4!! :(

Short answer....your machine could be a problem child right out of the box and cause endless drama from day one or it could still be humming like a bird 10 years from now.

Quality control doesn't really exist in hardware manufacturer. It's more luck of the draw :P
