Easiest way to do a full backup on Win 10 desktop

Hi all,
I'm fairly new to computers. Just learned about them thru our Senior center classes. I want to do a full backup of my computer so not to lose my pictures and notes. We tried a Sandisk 125mb flash drive but it wouldn't work.
My neighbor said his son said to buy an external because it's so easy, even I can do it.
Is he right? If so, I'd appreciate the easiest step by step directions on how to do it.

Yes, first, you must buy an external USB hard drive. One that is 1 terrabyte (1TB) in size should be enough.
