are you using the key on another computer, if OEM, is it retail or manufacturers oem? In general, if the key is currently not being used on another computer and it is not manufacturers oem, it can be use. There could be other exceptions too.

if it came with the computer you are reinstalling on, there should be no problems. in most cases if you are reinstalling, you really do not have to worry about a key. Microsoft stores the original activation info so if you need to reinstall, it will auto activate.

The difference between manufacturers and retail oem is manufacturers came with the brand new computer - for example the OS on a brand bnew Dell computer. It can never be transfer to another computer. Retail also called system builders oem is what you buy when building your own computer. It is usually only good for a newly built computer.
