My partner, a friend, and I are planning to go to England in October. We'll be starting in London and moving upwards to eventually Isla and back. My friend will be using her phone plan since TMo has an attractive International plan, but my partner and I will have to find service.

Do all y'all have any recommendations and prices for carriers while we're there? Our phones should be fine for GSM/EDGE/Quadband-3G, I have a pentaband 3G Nokia if really needed, and I'm not too concerned with no 4G. I would prefer some kind of Data just in case I need to Skype from across the pond.

Or, as an alternative, would it be easier/cheaper for us to consider a TMo prepaid plan here in the US if the same free International roaming is offered on pre-paid?

You would be best off looking at Pay As You Go from EE, o2, Vodafone or 3. You would probably want to look in stores once you get here though.

Thanks for the carrier lists, all y'all. I assume I'll be fine with whatever while in London proper, but as we start moving up to Scotland and other places north, are there particular carriers better to choose from, or is it pretty painless overall, coverage-wise?

You should be fine coverage wise as the major networks tend to cover the whole of the UK, so unless you're going somewhere completely remote then you should have good coverage from all of them. Here in the UK the major networks tend to share masts anyway.

Thanks for all the information, all y'all! I'm one step closer to just worrying about what to pack and what must-sees to do.

Don... When I went overseas for a long trip, one of the best things I did before hand was to sit with Here Maps open on my Laptop while I watched video guides. When I saw something I knew I wanted to see, I marked it as a favorite in Here and added it to a collection. I had a collection named after each city we were to stay at....

All of this synced automatically to my phone and tablet. Every night I would spend a few minutes deciding what to see the next day, planning routes, transportation etc. Having it all on Here made it easy to plan each day, decide how to group sites and maximize the number of things seen each day. Navigation on the phone was easy then. Also, all the info in Here about what is local to where you are really helps.

Have a great trip!!!!
