You can definitely send sound through HDMI. I have an HDMI cable to my monitor which has an audio jack, and I hook up speakers to my monitor. Works great.

Not all monitors are supported. I can't seem to find a list of which are and which aren't. But my ASUS ProArt is not while other monitors that I've tried are. Btw, all other tablets / laptops / computers that I tried on my ASUS ProArt audio works just fine. It's only the 950XL through the Display Dock / HDMI that doesn't work. I haven't tried a DisplayPort cable yet and like I said, it works fine on other monitors. Somewhere on MS website it says that not all monitors are supported. I have no idea why and no reason is given. I'll see if I can find it.

I can't find my original find regarding this topic (I should have bookmarked it). Anyhow, here is a thread on Microsoft Community with similar questions although no answers yet...

"Do both HDMI and DisplayPort outputs also support audio?

Yes, both HDMI and DisplayPort support audio. This feature depends not only on the capabilities of your monitor or TV, but also on the resolution of the video you’re viewing.

For example, if your monitor supports CEA resolutions, then you would typically get a 1080p (Full HD, 1920 x 1080) video with audio.

However, if your monitor only supports VESA resolutions, then you can use resolutions up to 1200p (WUXGA, 1920 x 1200) but without audio. The reason being is that the VESA standards do not support audio."
