I posted this on an older thread, but thought it might help more to be fresh.

This fixed the issue with Cortana for me, as I'm on TWC. I went to http://dnssearch.rr.com/prefs.php from my home network, and changed the first option to disable the search redirect. I found this on a blog from 2012 http://www.joshuacuellar.net/blog/di...ner-dns-search

I didn't know carriers could limit it. Thanks.

So are we expected to correct this on every WiFi network that doesn't let us use Cortana. That is horrible if that is the case. Hopefully Microsoft has some tweak to make it work properly with all ISPs.

Will do this the next time I'm at my mother-in-law's. Even then, every time your IP address changes you have to redo this. Since most consumer accounts use dynamic IPs, you may have to do this more times than what would be practical.

The best method is to just put a router that you control behind your ISPs modem and set the DNS servers to another provider.

It's not Microsoft's fault. Even without Cortana when you hit the search button you wouldn't be taken to Bing but your ISP's search provider. This isn't a WP8.1 problem. Your ISP can direct your traffic anywhere they want to.
