"Critical Error: Start menu and Cortana aren't working." help?

had the exact same prob.. game freeze and everything..
do this..
crt alt del to bring up task manager
click file
run new task
enter msconfig w/admin privileges
go to boot section, click on safeboot and network
ok to restart
after restart just repeat the process but unclick the safe boot square in msconfig
restart again..
you should be good.

I did the same up until the safe mode stuff, instead
-I went to services
-Then unchecked the "Bit Service"
-Restarted it
-Then rechecked the Bit Service
-And restarted it
All fixed, good luck

Your antivirus needs to be updated for windows 10, this was stated in the release notes to only install av which explicitly states it works with w10. Avg supports windows 10 and is free for personal use.

I have just done this as this error came up and my laptop have been restarting for the last hour?!? Help!

I was getting the 'Critical Error: Start menu & Cortana...' error about every third time I restarted my computer. Now I think I have found a solution (at least one that worked for me).
By chance, are you using a PIN or your face to log in to the system? Try changing the method to your actual password. I did it just by idle curiosity about two weeks ago and realized I haven't gotten the error since. I didn't even have to uninstall my antivirus (which is AVAST, by the way) or install any other program. Of course, YMMV.
