It seems i-mate is working on a phone/terminal combination that is suspiciously similar to the Redfly idea: http://www.pocket-lint.com/news/news...-concept.phtml

It's only supposed to work with one specific phone modell, though...

This has been around the web for a while. I think personally it would be a hard sell. But Competition would be a good thing.

Wow, they call themselves "gadget news" and they didn't even mention the Redfly in their list of "similar devices". I'm not a crazy fanboy but as Celio seems to be the only company with a functioning product in this space, that seems a bit...uninformed.

The problem with a one-device solution is that I switch phones every 6 months or so (though I have had the Touch Pro that long and might stick with it for longer than usual due to its capabilities and the economy). I can't imagine adding $200+ to the cost of every phone I buy, not to mention the collection of e-waste of old terminal companions I'd accumulate!

What I do like, though, is the idea of giving the phone a beefed-up processor to handle the load of more intensive computing on the terminal. If you could set the processor into a phone mode (underclock) vs. a "terminal-connected" mode (max CPU) without overheating, the terminal experience would improve greatly.

Old news (February). As is the 'news' about a similar device for an iPhone, and that turned out to be simply a design concept.

And i-Mate is a company barely keeping its head above the water. I'm not sure it has the resources to actually bring this device to market.
