AT&T Lumia 640 is just $59.99 at Microsoft Store [Expired]

While the new Lumia 950 and Lumia 950 XL are getting most of Windows Phone press lately, you might want to think about getting a cheaper phone that can be updated to Windows 10 Mobile. The Microsoft Store site in the US currently has a deal one of those phones, the AT&T no-contract version of the Lumia 640.

Note that at time the Blog story posted the sale price at Microsoft Store was $39... The price is now back up to $59.99, which is still a solid value on a 640. It is locked to AT&T. Check this thread for discussion on unlocking.

Gone one at MSFT store online and one at BB. Both came to about $33 with taxes.

Do you know if these are sold as unlocked. A lot of questions from the MS store say the device is unlocked. Is the BB deal the same? Or do I need to ask AT&T to unlock it for me (not looking forward to that process)

No they are not unlocked. You HAVE to get AT&T to unlock it, but supposedly it is a painless process. I will post details tomorrow.

Okay so both my Lumia 640 devices arrived today. MSFT version comes in a nice rectangular box and the Best Buy version comes in that ugly round box that is carrier in retail stores including Walmart as well. This one has a activation scan barcode. So if BB scanned it then AT&T will deny my unlock request (happened to me with a Walmart unit I bought about three months ago). We should find out the results in 48 hours, I will update the thread with my results for either device.

Barcode differences
AT&T version, this has the scan for activation prompt.

Microsoft store version is slightly different.

geez - I hope they didn't scan mine from BB before they shipped it. Anyway to know outside of submitting the unlock request? I've bought one from MS store in the past, but this is my first BB buy.

I submitted for the Best Buy phone that I got today. The phone I am using I bought used a few weeks ago (640). No idea if it was a go phone or not, and/or how long the prior user had it. I got a code after a few days with that one.

I tried it with the Walmart phone (identical to the one from BB) and they refused to unlock it. I have heard that people seem to have better luck with the version from MSFT store. I bought both to see which one is successful! They still have about 10 more hours before they respond. Although I remember that the last time around it took them more than their promised time of 48 hours.
