A lot of the time I just follow what people are talking about online. It helps to follow at least 1-2 generalized sources (gaming news sites, r/Games) for big games and some smaller/more specific sources for genres you care about (many genres have subreddits for this, for example I follow r/JRPG because JRPGs are niche and I like them).

I also make a point of keeping track of developers who've made games I like in the past.

Trailers are also quite useful to me. If I see a trailer (that has ******* gameplay in it) and it seems like something that would be up my alley, I'll be sure to keep an eye on the game when it releases.

Finally Youtube videos can occasionally pique my interest. This isn't quite as frequent, since even a lot of Youtubers I like don't have tastes that really align with mine, but for example I recently played and adored Furi partially due to stumbling across the Joseph Anderson video on it.
One thing to keep in mind is that you don't have to play everything that's popular/noteworthy out of some vague notion of being "a gamer." Find the stuff you really care about and keep up with it.
