PS4 Doesn't Support DLNA or MP3s at Launch; Shuhei Yoshida Will Pass Along Feedback to PS4 Dev Team - PlayStation LifeStyle
Xbox One supports all all of the above. I was a bit upset about lack of 1080p for X1 COD. But this confirms my reasoning for getting X1. It's so much more than a gaming console.11-02-2013 10:12 PMLike 0 - The Xbox One won't support mp3's at launch either. And it will need another Windows device (PC or WP) with Play To capabilities to be able to stream it.
I was surprised by PS4's lack of support for DLNA (something that Sony itself created). And it's also baffling that the PS4 won't play CDs. Microsoft did well coming right away to clarify that the Xbox One will, because until now what we knew was that NONE of the consoles would support streaming of content through a PC etc.
However, I wouldn't be surprised if Sony changed that upon launch. Apparently the backlash for the lack of those features was harsh (not as harsh as towards Xbox One's DRM but still) and Sony has already said they'll see into it. And I'm betting by "see into it for the future" means "oh sh*t, we have to fix that right away".
Makes sense if you think of it. If both are supposed to be "next generation consoles" it makes absolutely no sense that they lack features the former incarnations have. It's stupid (though economically understandable) enough that they can't play games from the prior consoles.11-02-2013 10:26 PMLike 0 - Yeah, pretty sure that Sony will eventually get the PS4 a software update that will enable all, if not most of these features. Doesn't really bother me, since I don't use my console for stuff like that, but I understand where the complaints are coming from.11-03-2013 11:12 AMLike 0

- Hey, don't be so sure. Remember that their "updates" with the PS3 involved removal of Linux installation and backwards compatibility.11-03-2013 12:44 PMLike 0
- I don't think many users who brought a PS3 would be able to do a installation of Linux anyway or know about it and if so it would be very small amount of users. As well SONY properly would have got rid off it due to being a security risk or may have caused issues with the system.11-03-2013 02:47 PMLike 0
- Yeah, but the military actually strung a bunch of PS3s together, put Linus on them, and made a supercomputer. They weren't able to update the consoles after a while because of the removal of the feature, though.11-03-2013 03:33 PMLike 0

"The Air Force Research Laboratory Information Directorate at Rome N.Y. will conduct a ribbon cutting Dec. 1 on a most unlikely supercomputer: a cluster of 1,760 Sony PlayStation 3 processors and 168 general-purpose Graphical Processing Units."
There's also a general article about non-gaming applications:

Apart from the cell technology that was a pain for developers.11-03-2013 04:56 PMLike 0 - Jas00555Retired AmbassadorDoes the PS3 have a proprietary CPU? If not, then does the supercomputer really have anything to do with the playstation at all? It sounds like they're just using the type of processor that is in the PS3. I don't think they would actually buy ps3's just for the processor unless it was a state of the art proprietary one.11-03-2013 05:07 PMLike 0

http://www.playerattack.com/imagery/...ercomputer.jpg11-03-2013 09:41 PMLike 0 - It doesn't matter what features the xb1 has over the ps4. The xb1 is less powerful, the OS is supposedly a mess, its harder to develop for ,its launching in half the countries as the ps4, its foot print is huge compared to the ps4, it has a power brick, the indie selection is putrid , and it basically can't keep up yet with the ps4. I cancelled my xb1 preorder and just bought a new video card. There's no way im beta testing the xb1 for MS. I'll wait until July. Microsoft screwed the Xbox brand in every way possible11-03-2013 10:14 PMLike 0

2) you've never even used it so just by saying "supposedly" you look dumb by basing your arguments on hypothetical. Edit: also, I don't know where you got "the OS is a mess". Even PS fans aren't happy about the PS4 OS saying how it looks like MySpace while the Xbox OS has been praised across the board.
3) oh, wow, its 2cm bigger than the PS4. do you know what else it 2cm? A bottle cap.
4) maybe indie games are your thing, but I've never bought one and I don't care.
5) please lend us your professional developer opinion, I'm sure you know what you're talking about. I guess a few games not being 1080p is a deal-breaker for you? Weird.11-03-2013 10:25 PMLike 0 - 1) the X1 has waaaayyyy more potential power than the ps4 due to cloud computing.

2. By a "mess," he means that it's not the best of times for developers, which has been said (along with the issues regarding the Kinect/system GPU requirements and the ESRAM).
3. I think he means the power, though IDK what they are pulling for power in either case, so validity cannot be verified (at least, not by this reader).
4. And if they are, it affects him. Still, it doesn't seem like the state of indie games is necessarily bad on Microsoft, as they sounded like they were doing a lot to make it good at the show in Germany (or whatever) over the summer.
5. I don't know what this part of your reply actually means. However, consider that a 2-D fighting game, Killer Instinct, couldn't pull off 1080p. That really IS something worth worrying about, because if something that isn't apparently graphically-intensive and made in-house (sort-of, since Microsoft owns Rare) cannot pull of next-gen resolutions, the possibility of it in the future becomes less. Thing is, people say "Forza is 1080p!" but that is the ONLY game we've heard is 1080p so far. Killer Instinct, Call of Duty, Battlefield, Ryse, and Dead Rising allegedly are all sub-1080p (all are verified but Dead Rising). It might not be the BIGGEST problem, but when you get to Quantum Break, I'd imagine such a cinematic game would make those drawbacks more noticeable, if they are present.11-04-2013 12:18 AMLike 0 -
- Wouldn't you just put it behind your TV stand like every other plug? I'm just saying with the way specs, numbers, and apparent "insider knowledge" of X1 are thrown around here...putting a power brick behind everything can't be that difficult of a concept to grasp.11-04-2013 02:45 AMLike 0
- I suppose with certain kind of setups the power brick might be annoying, but I don't see it as an issue for majority of people. Mobility I find as a bit silly argument, I would be a bit mad at MS if they sacrificed ANYTHING in the Xbox One and said it was to make it easier to travel with.11-04-2013 04:07 AMLike 0
- Well, early-on, you're likely going to have many circles of friends where some don't own the new consoles. In those cases, you'd have people taking their consoles to their friends' houses, and that's where the inconvenience of modularity comes into play. Again, it's not some major deal, but I know, for instance, my cousin traded in his 360 a few years back. We both had one, and I had a different model of the--both were the original style, but they had different power input, so the connectors were different. The higher-powered plug worked on the lower-powered console, but not vice versa, and he accidentally traded in the low-power console and high-power brick together (GameStop let us swap it out, no problem). That's a different issue altogether, but I can also say that when you're transporting something like that, it would be an annoyance if you went across town to a friend's and forgot it, haha.11-04-2013 04:15 AMLike 0
