I just discovered that for over a year I have not been getting true surround sound using HDMI pass-through.

Recently, I switched from WMC to MediaPortal in anticipation of getting the free Windows 10 upgrade. I was noticing that certain content was quiet, causing me to have to use the remote more to adjust volume. I started poking around in my setup and noticed that my sound devices could only use stereo through HDMI. I did a little research and learned that the Xbox One HDMI pass-through is stereo only. I connected my PC directly to my surround sound receiver and suddenly I got the option for 5.1 or 7.1.

The Xbox One will take the stereo input and simulate surround sound with Dolby Pro Logic. However, your set top box will only output stereo. If surround sound is important to you (more important than OneGuide and voice commands), then I recommend ditching HDMI pass-through. That's what I did.
