I'm wondering if anyone has tried the "adapter services" on EBay? They seem to be service that will change/add cabling to the Kinect unit to eliminate the need for the adapter (that has gotten outrageously expensive). I realize it would void any warranty, but since mine is well past it anyway that isn't a concern.
