Question about motherboards and cpu's

Hello,
I have a 6gen motherboard can I use a 7gen or 8gen cpu and if so what do I need to do or what features do I lose. I ask coz I think there should not be an issue as the socket are the same size but am not 100% sure.
Can some one please help me.

Can you please specify what motherboard you have? I think 7th gen CPUs can be used on 6th gen MBs by updating their bios. And no you can't use 8th gen CPU on a 6th gen board.

Like naterist said, you can technically use the Maximus VIII for a 7th Gen CPU, but it's always best to match the mobo gen with the CPU gen. If you want to go for an 8th Gen CPU, it's time to get a new mobo.
