I'm a high school teacher, applying for a tech grant. I'm wanting to get a class set of usable Windows tablets set up with keyboards. I also want 30 useable styli that are fine-tipped for handwriting/inking. My main purpose for them is to use OneNote in class. The grant isn't for a ton, so there's no way I could equip the room with 30 Surface 3 tablets. Wal-Mart has these RCA devices that look interesting. I know you get what you pay for, but I don't need a processing powerhouse or the greatest screen image quality. I just need a touchscreen device that can run the full desktop version of OneNote 2013.

Has anyone played around with one the RCA 10.1" 2in1 Tablet 32GB Quad Core in person? (I'm not allowed to post links here yet--just go to wal-mart's web site and search for it) My local Wally Worlds don't stock them, so I haven't been able to see in person to sample.

That RCA tablet is a pretty decent device for the price. There are two issues to keep in mind.

1GB RAM may indicate that it is running the 32-bit version of Win 8.1. I bought an 8" windows tablet from Best Buy, it had 1GB RAM and it was the 32-bit version. I have found that to be adequate for running basic software. It has the added benefit of being able to run older Win16 apps.

32GB storage is not a lot of space. There'll probably be about 15-18GB free. It doesn't have an active digitizer so fine-tipped styli are not available.

What price range per unit are you looking at?

    Thanks for the response.
$160 per device is my limit. This would be a classroom set of 30 devices. 5 students would be using each device daily, one kid per class period, so they won't be storing things on the tablets internal space. They will be using OneNote desktop most days. Other uses will be internet research and O365 applications. I figure 1Gig of memory should serve our purposes, unless someone has way too much open at once. Some students will be inserting audio recordings into their OneNote pages during lecture time, but I think (correct me if I’m wrong) that 1Gig would still work.

Yeah, I wasn’t sure about touchscreen performance with a stylus like the Adonit. My son uses one with his Toshiba Encore2 tablet, and it works pretty well. Certainly not like my Surface Pen experience, but good enough for adding handwriting to OneNote.
