Hey, there. I'm a student from Mazenod and I'm going to be starting VCE. I know, scary. My laptop is currently on its deathbed (have not taken good care of it.) I want you guys, the community to suggest some good laptops for a student like myself ;) I'm personally looking for good value (somewhere around 1000) and able to run casual games, thanks in advance.

A ThinkPad T-series is a good bet. An X if you want something smaller is fine too.
Also check out Dell's Latitude lineup.

Thanks! I'll have a look at the ThinkPad laptops. The X260 is actually on sale at the moment, along with other ThinkPad laptops.

Just choose any laptop as long as it battery life is long and also take into consideration the type of course you'll undertake. Engineering courses may require that you run some specific software suites like Auto CAD, project simulation software and many more. So go for something with better processor to avoid any problem.
Another thing you can consider is portability of the laptop, you need something you can carry around without getting tired. Good examples that you can consider include Lenovo Thinkpad X140e, Lenovo G50, HP 15-ay011nr Full HD etc. However, don't be bound by these three...do your thorough research. Also sometime you can inquire from the head of department on the university that you'll join. Most likely they have recommendations.

Yeah, I bought an e460 with 2GB graphics and core i7, it was very inexpensive. It was $888AU for a 1080p IPS screen, too! I'm happy with my choice :)
