- I truly believe that the one thing that holding these two back from being good looking devices is that massive bottom bezel. Either get rid of the bottom bezel, or add capacitive buttons.

Even though I'd prefer a phone with a removable shell like low end Lumia, but grippier, I have to admit the flagship phone should have some bling appeal.- Share

- I agree the bezel is too big but I don't think that's the only problem with the looks - the whole device looks cheap, uninspired and mid-range. Given the competitors out there (the Edge) this design isn't going to win any market share.

- Personally i really like the design its clean and understated. I dont get where the it "looks cheap" comments are coming from. What looks cheap? What exactly is a non cheap phone supposed to look like? Should it be triangle shaped? Or maybe hexagon? Should it be gold plated and have diamonds for buttons in order for it to LOOK expensive?

- 1. The new Note is a good comparison to the XL; compare the side bezels of the two to see why people think this looks cheap.
2. The rounded glass on high-end Lumias was a selling point and made for a beautiful cohesive design. The front of these look like a 635.
3. There are 6 separate visible elements on the back of each of these phones (microphones, speakers, flash, camera, logo, branding). Look at a 920 or an iPhone or an 830. Contained, cohesive, clean.
Makes my decision to trade in my 830 all the much easier - would have been heartbroken if I'd gone back to iPhone and these had come out looking like an 830 with modern specs :)08-27-2015 12:35 PMLike 0 - 1. As far as the curved glass, keep in mind that the press images are flat. They may not properly reflect what the glass looks like. For example, look at these Lumia Icon press images. The Icon does have the curved glass that makes it so sexy.
08-27-2015 12:51 PMLike 0 - Remember, these phones use on screen button. Not capacitive buttons. So the bottom bezel is a lot smaller than it looks, even the top bezel looks smaller than it is on my 830.

- 1. I dont think bezel size equates to looking cheap.
2. From these renders looking straight on or from one side you cant even see the glass edge to determine what its like.
3. I dont get the six element thing. I see what i see on every other phone, a camera some branding and a logo. Should the phone back be a blank slate with no camera or branding ar all?

Again, i'd be willing to forgive a bezel that large if it had capacitive buttons on it. But it doesn't.- Share

The rest of this post is not directed at anyone in particular, but just a rebuff of the "bezel" argument.
Consider that the Cityman has to have the new USB-C connector down there, leaving little room for thickness and screen real estate. Top bezel on the Cityman has to contain the new camera that can handle iris scanning & recognition. The note doesn't have the camera that can handle that up front, and this new camera needs more space.
Instead of everyone whining about the bezel size, why don't you take a look at the technology contained underneath to see if it is justified? If you don't like it after seeing why they had to arrange things the way they did, then by all means go and buy an inferior piece of tech. People have been complaining that they want Microsoft to get ahead of the game with the tech, and when they finally do, people complain some more. SMH
Drop that note one time and you'll have scratches and dents that will never be fixed. It will still work, but the bling value just dropped. Drop that Cityman, pick it up, dust it off. Keep going. That's the kind of thing I look at.- Share

I don't have a problem with the top bezel. I think it's reasonably sized. And you could be right about the USB-C needing more space, but i haven't seen any evidence to suggest it.
And what does Bezel size have to do with how a phone survives when it's dropped?08-27-2015 02:22 PMLike 0 - rhapdogRetired Senior AmbassadorYay! I was SO going for that. ;)
Aluminum is pretty and all, but I'd rather have a shell made from titanium. Although the cost of titanium would make it much more prohibitive for most people, but it can be made just a pretty, but is way more rugged. If I were going to design the ultimate flagship, it would be encased in titanium with internal titanium supports. We worry about having Gorilla Glass 4 to keep our screens scratch-free, and then demand an aluminum shell. SMH.
Yeah, in this case it's the aluminum that should be offended. ;)
And I can't be positive about the USB-C needing more space. It's new tech, and sometimes implementing new tech makes it a little bigger at first? Hey, we'll see when it hits how the design affected it, because I'm sure it's going to be opened up for us all to see.- Share

Not everything is about the bezel. In this case, I'm referring to the "aluminum" shell. Aluminum is used because it is extremely lightweight and can be polished to be very attractive. However, aluminum is also very malleable, can be easily bend, dented, scratched, and when exposed to a certain number of common liquids, can also be permanently stained.

The 1520 was beautiful, and the 930/ICON was too (it is just too damn thick)
These phones appear to have absolutely no elegance or beauty at all, like some cheap manufacturers android device...
This phone is hideous imho, and I hope what appears is going to be Microsoft's "Surface Phone" is beautiful, aesthetically pleasing, while also being arguably the best Windows Device there is (Much like the Surface Pro 3), because these are just ugly and many people agree...
and its not even about one or two small details. It is how the entire design comes together....
A thick bottom bezel WHILE also having on screen buttons on top of it...
Why are they still slapping ugly worded branding on the front of their mobile devices, when it will look so much better without it ( I completely understand Samsung and others do this, but come on, you have to agree the front branding is hideous. This is why the AT&T L830 has the best Lumia front panel IMHO... Just beautiful smooth glass, no logos anywhere.)
The ugly designed camera bump... The 925 camera bump was beautiful, and so was the 1520's, and the cancelled McLaren.... but something about this one screams monstrosity, and that silver rim around the 950xl camera looks very tacky
Lastly the speaker design... It's ugly, ugly, ugly!! Do I even need to go into this one?
Once again, don't attack me for complaining about the camera design, or the bezel, or the on screen buttons, please. Because its not just the thick bezel paired up with on screen buttons, or the hideous speaker design... It's the fact that they did all these sins and slapped them together on one device... These are just too many hideous aesthetic flaws on one single device... This phone doesn't at all look luxurious like the 925, 830, 1520, or 930/ICON...
At this point, If these devices come out Microsoft's womb looking like this... I will not be buying
So if what I hope is the Surface Phone disappoints either aesthetically or functionality wise also, I will be going with another mobile platform...
(Will still stay with Xbox, and Surface though, because XBOX>PS4, and Apple doesn't offer anything like the Surface... yet)- Share

- What I don't get is, we've already seen these press images before without all this "lookit dis fugly bezzle" comments. We get some blurry-*** images posted today and everyone goes nuts.
The bezel isn't *that* big and it looks like any other smartphone out there. Actually, this looks like a L640, really. Did anyone say the L640 looked like ***? No. In my opinion, so long as the glass is premium, the plastic strong/premium like my old 920 and it has a flagship worthy camera, I'm good. Even if it still looks like the L640.
And why is there so much talk about how it looks? It's like a bunch of iPhone fanboys critiquing around here today.- Share

I'm expecting a design a little closer to this image for my next Windows Phone. It has a very clean and professional look to it. I hope HTC hasn't given up on Windows Phone. They did a really decent job on my HTC One M8 (Windows Phone)- Share

Also there doesn't need to necessarily be "iPhone fanboys" here today in order for there to be much talk of the design... Lumia right alongside the camera and other features has always been a series that's been blessed with great, beautiful designs for flagships that were mostly plastic, but good plastic and still beautiful.
These forums are full of ppl praising Lumia design, including the unibody plastic phones.. It's not the plastic that I think ppl are upset about...or the materials at all... They have just made what appears to be an ugly device in many many ppl's eyes
I understand cool features (especially camera) have always been a plus with Lumia, but please don't exclude the fact that beautiful, high quality, simple, while also unique designs haven't been apart of the Lumia trademark also, by saying "iphone fanboys" must be around today, as if Lumia owners weren't ever in love with design, and iPhones have been the only devices known and praised for beauty
Sorry for the long text book but... Had to make my point :P- Share
