How about table projection and kinect type sensor to know what on the table you are pushing! Right down to on-table typing!

I'm just blabbing :)

That's how this tech works. The sony one table device above that I linked a picture to, uses infrared to know what you are touching. So it would project the screen, you tap what you want, and type on the virtual keyboard.

I've seen the same tech used for a proto-type wrist device, and also for a commonly sold infrared portable keyboard. Apparently its quite good for typing once you get used to it.

I imagine the hinge for the phone gives it the nessasary height.

Here's the sony prototype device in action:

Here's the infrared keyboard:

I think the key will be improving on the projection quality, and the infrared motion detection, from existing technologies. To make it good, they'll really need to hone it.

I bet they wait till 2018 or end of 2017. Or they could just do it basing a guage on UWP apps where they have grown too. C-Shell uses the UWP. But if win32 still gets integrated and can emulate well in the C-Shell UI, then I say they should release one before 2018.

The projector could make windows on arm, win32 emulation much more useful to the everyday person on a phone. As you could actually run your, IDK, iTunes or whatever on the go without needing a dock.

But only in the dark :p

Seriously though it would take a lot of lumens to project in lighting that you would find in an office environment. I guess that is why the rumor is only 1 hour for this feature, it would take a lot of power. Maybe it would be smarter if they built that into a slide on case with an extra, large battery.

Yeah, if you look at other examples of this tech, its bright enough to see indoors, but not super clear. Probably the biggest obstacle though is getting that infrared input spot on, previous tech examples have been slightly hit and miss. And with one hour only of the feature - boy heat could be a problem!

Bet this is a technical design nightmare, getting it to work nice.

There was actually a 2015 phone that tried this, and the display was bad....Things have gotten better but design wise its a lot of balls in the air.

I'm one of the biggest fan of Microsoft and Windows, I always have hope that Windows mobile will be as successful as other operating systems ( Android and iOS ) , so to hear good news about Windows 10 mobile is very exciting for me

iTunes will soon be on UWP too. I love continuum but until C-Shell comes, I did not get as much out of it I think as I could have.

Has anyone ever thought the "projection" is only meant as just a projection? Same function a Projector device has? Without IR sensors, Kinect like magic, but just to project your screen/presentation to the wall?

That would be easier to implement into a phone, and if I remember correctly, it has been done maybe some 10 year ago in a phone?

Would still be a killer feature :) Everyone would want a device like that, esp. enterprises :)
Anyhow... Can't wait to see what is actually coming :D

Cheers

Moto Mods do this for the Moto Android phones. But last more than an hour. If that is the case, and if this is a true feature, then makes more sense that it is more of an ARish ONTO TABLE feature than just plain projection. This, only due to why it chews up so much battery hours at once. Plain projection I think would be more widely used by users and more feasible. But who knows, as it seems this leak might be someone's total wish list of a witnessed proto device that might not make it to production.

Are any more events planned from Microsoft in coming months? Or only in the Fall?

Projection will be a disappointment. For anything other than viewing films in a really quite dark room, tiny 'pico' style projectors will not cut it. For good enough detail for any form of presentation or business use the projector needs to support 1080p, and 3000 lumens. 3000 lumens costs cash. The best 'cheap' projectors that achieve this seem to be the Epson ones at ~£500. And, whilst portable, they are nowhere near the size you could fit into your pocket let alone a phone.

Its a table projector according to the translation, like the sony proto, for use as a workstation via continuum, according to the translation.

It is not a wall projector, for making presentations. If we are to believe the at least half of the time correct Chinese rumour mill...

It would be a cool feature. But anything as version 1 is just that. New tech that only Geeks like us might be into or willing to use. Now the bad part about that feature would be the price tag to go along with it...

Well with cshell close, wouldn't surprise me if this was a relatively useful feature. Earlier protos have sort of paved the way (there was a terrible phone in 2015, and the sony box last year).

However, keeping the phone cool, slim and powerful will not be cheap ( it wouldn't surprise me if it needed specialised battery tech and was prone to overheating either).

I can see the motive - continuum is something most people will never even try. If the average user can just flick a toggle and have a desktop like experience on their tablet, it might at least demo the feature, and help make it less niche, and more approachable.

Although in practice its just going to go from "almost useless enterprise feature" to "hey maybe I can actually forgo my laptop".

IDK, I think a projection feature would be a wasted effort, or least limited for a consumer. Most smartphone use is done on the fly, and wouldn't have the benefit of a flat surface, let alone good lighting (or, actually the lack of). I like the fold-out FF better...small when on the move, big to do some serious "stuff", with a great camera, and screen for view videos/games. The CShell will make the phone easier for new comers that have had some Windows PC exposure, and with the Surface Products being as great as they have become, we might get some support from a hesitant demographic. Anyway, I excided to see what's around the corner:)

Project Andromeda (their credit card sized dual screens, that either attach on a hinge, or detach for dual screen useage).
That's definitely in the works as we speak.

But I suspect they are also working on a real glasses like, holographic display tech for using a windows on arm device with mixed reality. The display tech is openly agknowleged, but one only needs to add in the pieces (mixed reality, windows on arm), and rather than the fabled surface phone, you get a portable, wearable mixed reality platform running full windows....
