Just got on Xbox Music. I have a Windows phone and a pc at home with Xbox Music.I have mp3 on my phone as well as on my pc. The pc xbox music sees and plays it....the phone sees it but refuses to play it. I cannot get it in the "cloud" .Microsoft has nothing to match. Does that mean i cannot play it on the phone even though it is local on the phone? Very confused! Appreciate any help! Thank You!

Do you get any error message when you try to play it?

It will just play the next song. I guess MS does not have the song in the cloud so cannot match it.No errors. I see the song in the menu. This is for other random songs i have also.

Welcome to the board. What phone, what is its history; what is its OS version/history; and, what is the origin of the mp3s, and how did you get them on the phone?

I can only keep a fraction of my Music Pass and personal Collection on my Lumia 1020; so, I now keep ~12GB of nothing but mp3s that I've just dragged and dropped on the phone. All of them play without issues, including a few albums that are not at the marketplace. There is nothing mp3-related that needs to be "in the cloud" nor match to anything, nor even to sync with anything, even with my PC.

Good luck getting past this, which you should.

1520 phone (1st win phone had note 3 before never had a problem) origin is i have cd of Rammstein ...i made the mp3 from it. (yes i really did ) all songs work except 1st song on phone..granted it works from xbox music on pc. I have a few more that are similar...i will have to live with it for now. The song and album are not on marketplace for MS. But just noticed on xbox one when i try it says "songs from this album have been removed from xbox live at request of copyright holder.(it is reading my songs from cloud as no physical songs are on xboxone)

It sounds like you have the "Automatically add matched songs on this PC to your cloud collection" when you probably don't need it.

Having turned it on, you will probably have to turn it off, delete your cloud stuff that is a copy of local music, then probably reload your local copy as well. What the function does is "Match" your local music with the best match it can find, so for example if like me you have all the Led Zeppelin albums and try to "Match" them, you aren't going to get anywhere as they (Jimmy Page) like total control of their copyright and won't allow their albums to be used on a lot of online services.

On the 1520 go to music, collection, artist then use the small "Showing" and choose "On my phone" instead of all music or streaming.

This should show you your local copy of your album and you might be able to play the song.

If you work with local music on all your devices there is no need to turn on the "Automatically add matched songs" function, so go to your PC, start music, bring up the charms, preferences and turn it off.

I have an Xbox One as well and this does mean my Xbox doesn't know about local music but there is a new update coming that will sort this.

I do think the "Automatically add matched songs on this PC to your cloud collection" function should come with a big RED warning button as it seems to be the cause of a lot of confusion amongst XboxMusic users and is potentially dangerous to people who have much loved collections of ripped CD's etc.

    It should say something like:

"DON'T turn this function on until you understand the consequences"

And I say this as a person who like Xbox Music, it works, non of the problems that other people seem to have, but I did take the trouble to find out how it works before I committed to it and put the bulk of my local collection on all of my devices.

Also be aware, if you turn on the "Automatically add matched songs on this PC to your cloud collection" on any of your devices, then turn it off, the damage is already done.

Your Led Zeppelin albums are magically available on all devices but are reduced to one song.

If you have multiple devices like me (1520, desktop, laptop, Surface and an Xbox One) it seems like you have lost half your music and it could also be the cause of the album art issue as well (Not an issue I suffer with, in fact I now have album art on stuff I never managed to have it on before)..

After turning this function on, on the basis of "I wonder what this does", all of a sudden you have in my case a few albums that are mucked up and on all devices before you can blink and I spent a morning and part of an afternoon sorting it out and learning how it all works. Only then did I add my main collection of local music on all my devices.

So now my local music is just that, local, my cloud collection is made up of stuff I have added to my collection from my Xbox Music pass (I got mine last weekend and think it is well worth the money, and I was very sceptical about it).

Hope that all makes some sense.

No problems, when you get it sorted you can still play any of your local music on your Xbox, but you have to "Push" it from your PC, so in the music folder in This PC right click and play to Xbox, it isn't fantastic but it will do until the media support app using USB becomes available.

I only have a few messed up albums, usually when I find one I archive it somewhere and then download the xbox music version (if available)

The easiest way I have found to fix it when its messed up, if you then want to ignore the matching part
Launch the app and turn off the matching
Go into options and delete the location where it looks for music (options, preferences, where to look for music)
fully close music and start it again
it will now only show what has been matched and is streaming only
from songs tab select it all and delete (double check it is all streaming)
add your music location back in preferences and it will re populate all your music back into the app

or alternatively (this is the way I have done it many times)
turn off the matching and fully close music
move your music folder somewhere (cut and paste to desktop)
start music and it will only show badly matched songs
    delete all again here
fully close music and cut a past your music back to proper location
restart music and it will re populate with music without the matching
