Very few WMA formatted songs, actually I think they're all MP3 now.
And I believe download is 320 kbps, but not certain.

No, It won't be played in WMP because of the DRM protection. And when you stream or download a song, you get a 192Kbits/s DRM protected WMA file.
You'll only get a 320Kbits/s MP3 file if you have bought the song.

I have spent some hours looking for the answer but I just found conjectures (guess/believe/suppose) but no facts anywhere. Maybe Microsoft tell it somewhere but they manage to hide it for Groove Music passport customers pretty well. Is it because the bitrate is so low? In my phone, Lumia 925 with Windows 10, the sound could be described as slim. Although I'm happy that the low quality of the files are not hided behind excessive use of bass, as mp3 files of Spotify does, I still want to hear some bass.

I quess it's correct. You can hear the the difference between streamed and offline songs and the streamed one sounds in my opinion is like having a really bad FM-tuner... It's big drawback. Offline for 320 bit/s is good, but this meens you need more diskspace for the offline content.
