While it can be easy enough to do the editing for adjusting the lighting on the phone, sometimes there are going to be some more advanced editing you would like to do at the same time, and having the reference photos for adjusting it yourself may come in handy at these times. Pulling out these reference photos is very much like extracting the living image video and photo from the living images that I wrote about over here.

When you do a rich capture on your Windows 10 Mobile device, there are 2 files saved on your device. One file is a .jpg file and the other is a .nar file. The .nar file contains the reference images for the rich capture.

Copy the .nar file to your PC. Rename the extension of this file from .nar to .zip and open with 7zip or another Zip file manager. You will see 5 files inside.
1. content.xml
2. Extra1.jpg
3. FnF.jpg
4. Reference.jpg
5. richsettings.xml

The Extra1.jpg can actually be ignored for the purpose of adjusting the lighting. What we want to do is extract FnF.jpg and Reference.jpg to a working folder on your PC. Using a capable photo editor that allows you to adjust image opacity and overlay images, we're going to import these 2 .jpg files as separate layers. I use GIMP, because it's quite powerful and also quite free. ;) If you don't know how to use GIMP or PhotoShop (the full one not Express), then you'll need to learn proper photo editing software in order to do this on the PC.

FnF.jpg is the photo without Flash, or the "low light" setting. use it for your back-most layer or background in GIMP. Then, set Reference.jpg as the top-most layer. Using the Opacity bar in the Layers tool box, adjust the opacity percentage of the Reference.jpg layer. 75% gives it 75% of the flash. 25% gives it 25% of the flash. Play with it and set it where it pleases you most.
