One would think...yes. But must be other regulations and restrictions that make it too cumbersome. Thus finding the cheap root worked best for HP it seems.

I was able to gain access to the file system on my X3 and found the files for the shutter and video start stop sounds. But I don't have the access yet to modify that directory or much of anything on c:\, but I am still looking into it. When mounted as mtp the files are located under This PC\HP Elite X3\Phone\Windows\Media - which equates to c:\windows\media.

I copied all the files to my pc and silenced all of them with an audio editing program. If I figure out a way to copy/move back to this directory in place of the originals, I let you know, or write up a tutorial.

The problem is I am not sure how I gained access to c:\ via MTP. I used interoptools to enable this, but it did not work at first. It is possible it required a reboot...

Just for reference the files included in the X3 c:\windows\media folder are named below:
10/14/2016 12:17 PM 4,592 aflock.wav
10/14/2016 12:14 PM 2,116 Focus0_22050hz.raw
10/14/2016 12:12 PM 2,380 Focus1_22050hz.raw

10/14/2016 12:13 PM 2,296 Focus3_22050hz.raw

10/14/2016 12:13 PM 17,664 MovePrevious_22050hz.raw
10/14/2016 12:13 PM 39,512 Show_22050hz.raw
10/14/2016 12:17 PM 8,806 shutter.wav
10/14/2016 12:16 PM 2,312 shutterstart.wav
10/14/2016 12:17 PM 2,392 shutterstop.wav
10/14/2016 12:17 PM 2,312 videostart.wav
10/14/2016 12:17 PM 2,392 videostop.wav

UPDATE: Just an update/correction more or less..While browsing the file system and the customization xml files, I also found there to be a second key that is under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Photos\OEM. It's the ShutterSoundUnlocked key. It's of course set to 0. This enables disables the ShuttersSoundUI key originally mentioned to even be used.

Did someone try to add other ringtones to the phone?. I was able to put new ones into the device ringtones folder, but they are not available in the sounds personalization menu.
Just saw this. I copied (using a Windows 10 PC) some of my Blackberry notifications, my Samsung ringtones, and one of the alarms from my 950xl. All is working fine. My ear is accustomed to the Blackberry notifications, even though my 6230 died several years ago.

What progress has been done here? Where you able to mute these annoying sounds? Willing to try it.

Anyone try setting the reg key or have any success with these files? As noted, the sounds are just insanely loud when they're not required for regions like the US. Was shocked at how loud the sound was to turn on video. Makes it a bit harder to capture moments when the kids are being kids because they hear the sound and stop. :-/

I disabled the shutter sound just now using interop tools. I recently bought a refurbished elite x3 and have been messing around with it today. I used app version InteropTools_1.9.437.0_arm_RC3. I've also gone as far as interop unlocking too but not sure if it is needed. In the Tweaks options is the ability to enable camera shutter sound. This will make the check box appear after reboot so you can uncheck it.

That was my next step. Looking at XDA and saw the tools, but haven't tried to get it installed on my x3 yet. Sounds like exactly what I'd want, though. I need to get a Win10 box going to install from everything I've been reading. Sounds like copying some certs, use the Win10 box to install over USB, tweak some stuff, etc. Of course, I could be wrong about that. It's been some time since I tried playing w/ the InteropTools - probably back w/ my Samsung Focus... Wasn't too concerned about anything else until the x3 came in with that really, really loud video start/stop sound. :D

There are 6 items you can install locally from your phone with it in developer mode. Those 6 are for the InteropTools app only. Alternatively to interop unlock the phone you need to use iutool.exe to push Nokia developer tool kit packages to the phone. Try to just install Interop tools only then enable that option and if it does not work then try to push the kit via iutool.

InteropToolsApp_1.9.437.0_arm.appxbundle
InteropToolsApp_1.9.437.0_arm.cer
Microsoft.NET.Native.Framework.1.6.appx
Microsoft.NET.Native.Runtime.1.6.appx
Microsoft.VCLibs.ARM.12.00.Universal.appx
Microsoft.VCLibs.ARM.14.00.appx

And for some reason, I just do not see the "shutter sound" in the tweaks area. I see LED settings, but not shutter sounds. I've seen registry editing to tweak that, but would rather avoid that if possible. Tried 1.9.437 and the latest 2.5.4. Also have trouble seeing what I'm choosing because the buttons are off the screen when I launch the interop app. :)

OK - one final followup. I ended up interop unlocking the device. I still don't see the camera tweaks under the "Tweaks" setting, but followed all of the instructions from the post in the XDA Thread. Steps here for anyone trying to follow along. Look up this thread on interop unlocking on XDA-Developers for more details, but here's what I did.

1. Downloaded all of the files
2. Put device in Developer mode to allow sideloading
3. Sideloaded the dependencies and app
4. Rebooted
5. Tried the app to see if I could tweak or edit the registry DWORD. (didn't work)
6. Downloaded the appropriate interop unlock files and Unzipped to a folder off my C: drive
7. Connected phone via USB
8. Launched Interop app and chose the Enable Installing NDTK option
9. Ran command prompt as admin to use the "iutool" command (after adding it to my path, *grumble* :) )
10. Phone restarted - and then had to restart again to see the apps on my SD card
11. Ran Interop app again to restore device data
12. Restarted phone
13. Still no tweak, so used registry to try to edit the ShutterSoundUnlocked key to DWORD = 1. This time it worked. I read the value to verify
14. Restarted (yet again)
15. Checked the "Sounds" setting and I see the option for camera sounds, turned off. Verified by trying to take a video and noting that it did _not_ play an annoyingly loud chirp when starting the video. :)

I absolutely do _not_ see that screen at all. Wondering if I have the wrong version of the Interop app installed or something. I tried going back to the 1.9 version from XDA, but it didn't seem to want to install properly so just stuck w/ the "current" version you can get from the store (and downloading/installing all of the dependencies). I still had to interop unlock to get access to write to the registry for that value. I could read it, but writing didn't work until interop unlock.

Did you just download the 1.9 version from somewhere in that set of threads and sideload that or did you use something else? Wondering if the "tweaks" were removed post-1.9.

Store one is not the same, and is a more work in progress than the sideloadable one.

Figured that out. Just never could get that earlier version to show up and launch. Not sure if that's because I tried the store version or not. Still - got it working thanks to your pointer to that registry key. Hoping the steps can help others who want to mute that shutter sound when it's legally allowed. Wouldn't have bothered me so much if the sound level for video was on par w/ the sound for photos.

Greatly appreciate you pointing the way to making this possible.

Another key(s) I adjust are the vibration for the nav bar keys to make it softer and less attrussive :). It's the buttons-> intensity and duration keys.

The one key I'm dying to find is the one for disabling vibration when receiving a sms in one your actively viewing I wish Microsoft could allow that to be disabled.

Update: Ok easy fix for the above. I went in on the Skype app which does what I want and is tons faster now...been a while since I used it. Liking it now.

Finally got around to working on the HP again. Got the LED light to work for notifications...it is blue.

Hey, Nate -

I'm a noob with interop and registry tools. Would you be able to make a guide of sorts for doing some stuff like this? Just a simple step by step would probably suffice. I'm primarily interested in killing the camera sounds and getting a notification light.

I'm sure many here would find it useful!
