When current inventory is exhausted you will have no recourse with Microsoft. HP is not pushing the x3 to the masses. It's a business-class phone and as such, they're going to have to provide full support for a minimum of 3-5 years. Companies don't upgrade on a 2 year cycle the way most consumers do. I'll give you an example. You can't download a Windows 7 ISO from Microsoft, you have to go through Digital River. HP on the other hand, still has full software support for my late, lamented TC1100 slate from 2002. I still see a few of them in hospitals every now and then.
Although I agree with everything you say here, in the interest of good information and for everyone's edification, I would like to point out that DR is a company that handles international sales / tariffs, fraud, client and consumer facing versions of storefronts, catalogs, and shopping carts. They also do mostly digital fulfilment, but some physical fulfilment as well. MS is one of many clients of DR, including Samsung, Adobe, Kaspersky, HTC, and many others (Symantec was one of the first and biggest, Blackberry was too at one time).

I say all this to point out that even when you get something from the MS store, you are actually using DR's servers and services - so technically everything comes from Digital River. This is very different from any other reseller where you may buy Win7. At least it was when I worked there 5-ish years ago.

I am currently using my X3. Still have both 1520.3 and 950XL. What I miss is dedicated camera button, glance, gadgets app (tap to pay not present either but not really too useful since mostly I see only Apple pay offered around town). Camera quality noticeably less with X3 but if I want quality I use my 1020 that I have kept to use as a connected camera. Iris scanner not notably different IMO. Love fingerprint scanner. I have the wallet folio case for the X3 and with the fingerprint scanner, just a touch and by the time I flip open the folio cover the phone is unlocked and instantly ready to use. Really like how the folio cover is an on off switch for the phone. Only time I use the power button is for reboots or shutting the phone off completely. The issue with the X3 that I am dealing with is the SD card removal error occurring intermittently but fairly frequently. HP was very responsive, calling me less than five minutes after opening a case online and they are overnighting me a new sim card tray. VERY impressed with that level of support. I have made the jump from 950XL to X3 and am satisfied with the move.

..depends, if its just for the looks, its the X3 to me, mine lays most of the time on my desk. In my experience the X3 its not so reliable, but she's gorgeous :)

If you had your choice of the x3 or 950 XL, which would you prefer? And why?
I would say the HP Elite x3 wins it for me. There are a couple things i like and dislike in both but its got a lot of pros for me and thats why i would choose it. Whereas the 950 XL 'only has' as 810 processor, 3GB RAM and 32GB storage. It does have a smaller screen which i like but that doesn't outweigh all the positives of the x3 for me :)

    HP Elite x3 Pros
    1. IP 67 - Water, Dust resistant
    2. Fingerprint Sensor
    3. Qualcomm Snapdragon 820
    4. 64 GB Storage
    5. 4150 mAh Battery
    6. Built-in (Qi, Powermat) Wireless Charging

Coming from a 950 XL to the ELite X3 I would say that the only thing I miss from the 950 XL is the better camera.

I would go for the x3. Newer, better looking, faster. But as others have stated, the camera is the only downside here.

Same as emmeborn, I am only missing the better camera. I would miss speed, screen and the fingerprint reader, when going back. And the battery.

X3 definitely. Newer equipment and current active FW updates from HP and GREAT HP support. OUTSTANDING battery life on the HP seals the deal. It's my daily driver so that is very important.

The camera is better on the 950XL but then again I use a full size DSLR for my main camera work, the camera on a phone is a mere convenience for me.

Price wise, I would go for the 950XL since I can find it around 300$. The X3 has bigger battery and newer Snapdragon but the only price I found it at is 1100$ and strangely it doesn't mention the desk dock and lapdock(as you'd think at this price). If only MS would license their camera stuff for a future consumer version of X3
