My phone shut off

I rebooted my phone then set it down. I picked it up later and hit the button to get on the phone and nothing happened. No screen or lights, dead. I plugged the phone into the charger and didn't see the charging light. I called Verizon and they had me hold the power button and the down volume button down for 15 seconds and the phone came back on. I didn't like that but now I know what to do. I guess what they had me do would be the same as pulling the battery out of a phone.
