Syncing/Backup Problem

In Settings | Email + my Microsoft account entry is visible but grayed out with message showing "Syncing..." This is preventing me from backing up or Syncing contacts, calendar, etc. Any thoughts about how to return this to a normal state...Is there a way to delete the current Microsoft account entry and setup another one(same ID, etc). I'm leery about shutting off the phone for fear of it getting hung up on restart while trying to sync with Microsoft account.
