I know this is an old thread but I recently bought a refurbished HTC 8X and just yesterday my phone started doing this same thing. It would buzz to turn on show the HTC load screen and then turn off. My incredibly smart husband was able to open the case (there are videos on youtube that show how to do this) and then pulled out the power button cable ribbon. My phone then turned off completely -which I had not been able to do before- Then when I plugged it in to the charger (still without the ribbon) it turned on normally. *Note: any Windows 8, 8.1, or 10 phone will turn on when plugged in* Apparently the ribbon shorted out and it was if I were repeatedly pressing the power button. From what I can see the power button ribbon is especially susceptible to water damage. Even the tiny bit that got in there from my 8 month old putting it in her mouth once was able to damage it. I ordered a replacement power button cable ribbon from Ebay for about $4.00 and now my phone is working perfectly.

I hope this helps anyone who may still have a similar problem!

Thanks for putting in the effort to throw that up here! I know people like you writing posts like that certainly saved my bacon a few times when I was a kid.
