Yesterday Verizon service went out. When it came back up, I had phone and messaging, but had lost the network data service and internet connection. My email accounts were not syncing with the phone. I spent almost all of today on the computer internet searching for a solution. I went to the Verizon store for help. They ordered me a new phone because there was nothing they could do.
I read about this happening to people taking their HTC Trophy to other countries, using the GSM cellular network there, and when they come back to the USA they can’t get their CDMA service to work. I don't know why this happened in my case just because the network went down for a while.
Here are some of the things you can try to get back your internet connection and data service. I tried all of them – except the hard reset.
+Shut down the phone and restart.
+Take out the battery for at least 30 seconds. It is kind of a soft reset.
+Install and/or run the Connection Set-up app. If you don’t have it on your phone, you will have to switch to Wi-Fi to go to the HTC apps on the Marketplace.
+dial *228, press SEND & choose option 1 to update the phone configuration, and the connections to the wireless towers. Stay on the line until the music stops and the voice ends the call.
+Do a hard reset. Check the internet for how to do this. This is like reinstalling the OS. You will want to back up your contacts and anything else you don’t want to lose, because this will wipe the phone. You will have to reinstall all the apps you have downloaded.
+And then there is this one that I was so glad I noticed. You can do a System Restore just like you can do on your PC. Plug your phone into the PC. Open Zune. Click on Settings on the top of the page. Click on Update on the left side. Zune will check for updates. It will then give you an option to Restore previous software version, and will give you the available restore point date. For me, it was a month ago since I last updated, so I clicked the Restore button. When it finished, my network service and internet connection were back. The email accounts synced up perfectly. I have to reinstall some of these updates but I’m back in business.
    Hope this helps somebody else.

I'm curious, are you running the most recent OS version (7.10.8773.98)? If you don't know how to check, it's in Settings -> about -> more info

I did not check to see where the OS version was when the service when out, but now that I have reinstalled the 2 updates that were available after the Restore, it is OS version 7.10.8773.98.
What I did notice though was the phone restored the Cellular Mode selection to Global mode "Your phone will automatically connect to the CDMA or GSM networks specified by your SIM card". I wonder if this is the default mode for the phone. The gal at the Verizon store said it should be on CDMA mode. I have to wonder if when the service came back up it tried to lock on to the GSM mode first, Failing that it then could not swtich to the CDMA mode, much like what happens when these people leave the country and then when they get back to the US they can't get back their CDMA network. Just a thought. I suppose I should switch this now to CDMA mode instead of leaving it in Global mode.
