Just something off the top of my head... Is your light/proximity sensor working fine? Because the screen won't turn on if, for example, you have your phone in your pocket and receive a notification... If it's malfunctioning, then the phone may "think" it's in your pocket and not turn the display on

I don't have the Cyan Update, but the with the 8.1 update my Wi-fi is pretty much the same it was before (Lumia 1020).

do you have the banner option on? If it's not on, the notifications will come but the screen will remain off.

I would say the 1520, as you are used to a big smartphone. In terms of internals, they are largely similar so you won't be loosing much on either one.
