Took it down to the local AT&T shop and got it working. Just took a hard reboot (volume + power apparently). Seems happy for the moment. Thanks for the input. :) The rep also said that the phone is selling well still.

Yeah I've got it too, coming from non-retina iOS devices I just figured it was a side effect of AMOLED displays. Not a dealbreaker for me though.

I think you may be on to something there. I've been able to get it to work by shifting how I hold the top of the phone (left side when using it as a camera). Trying to locate that sensor (is it with the light sensor next to the camera?).
