I am having the same problem with a HTC Trophy.

There is a Nickname text box in every contact's info that needs to have an entry if it is different than what you have in the Name text box. For example, your brother's name might be "David Johnson", but if you also have "Big Bro" in the nickname box, you can then use either one when searching...

It tells you who the text is from and asks you if you want it to be read, to which you need to reply "read it" to have it be read to you. It works really well overall, I have found.

Go into settings - System - Speech - Scroll to the bottom and change "Read aloud incoming text messages" to "always on".
