Microsoft just put this controversial Notepad feature behind a paywall

I have a Microsoft 365 Family subscription. I turn off "Content Analysis" in Office privacy. This essentially disables Copilot in Office. I turn off "Content Analysis" because I have some encrypted, sensitive documents I don't want exposed on the cloud, even though Microsoft says it deletes...

Microsoft is working on a smaller Surface Pro and Surface Laptop with Snapdragon X

This has long been needed. The Surface Pro is too heavy to be a tablet. It is almost 2 pounds. I would not buy a Windows on ARM computer though since I'm into music production. ASIO drivers and DAWs are just beginning to work on ARM.

Sorry, Bill": Android co-founder says Bill Gates is responsible for "the greatest mistake of all time," costing Microsoft $400 billion

Android became the market leader in mobile operating systems by breaking the law. In the early days of Android, it was given away for free to OEMs. That is a violation of predatory pricing in the anti-trust laws. They have corrected that and now charge licensing for Google Mobile Services like...

Windows 11 version 24H2: New features, next-gen AI PCs, and everything we know so far

I'm confused about the Energy Saver thing. Is there still going to be "Power Mode"? Power Mode remembers a setting for when plugged in, and when on battery. I set Power Mode to "Best Performance" when plugged in and best efficiency when on battery. I would not want to use Energy Saver when...

My biggest issue with Copilot+ isn't Windows Recall, it's that Microsoft is ignoring millions of Windows users

GPUs have to be coded using OpenCL or CUDA (NVIDIA only) for compute type of operations. I'm assuming the NPU based code needs to be ported to a GPU supported language. This will take time.

Apple Pay is on the way to Windows! But you need an iPhone to use it.

These proprietary payment systems should be rejected. There should be an open standard for payment. There is Click to Pay for the web, but it really is not catching on. Click to Pay will obfuscate your credit card number from the vendor.

A PR disaster: Microsoft has lost trust with its users, and Windows Recall is the straw that broke the camel's back

You would think putting all your stuff on the cloud would raise concerns. And I've always wondered if HP is looking at my print outs. Google looks at every URL you go to and all your search terms. Your ISP also looks at every URL you go to. I remember the Timeline feature in Windows. I disabled...

Microsoft VP describes the new iPad Pro as having a "3 legged OS" and it sums up my own past experience better than I ever could

I wish there were statistics collected on when you use a Windows 2-in-1 device without a keyboard. I think it would show better that Windows tablet is being used more than people realize.

I'm putting Windows on ARM compatibility to the test with my accessories and peripherals — has anything improved?

That sounds great that all these devices worked on ARM. I am still hesitant to switch to ARM mainly due to use of a Yamaha digital piano driver. It allows PC connectivity to my digital piano for MIDI and audio with one cable. If that doesn't work, then I pretty much would have to return the...

Microsoft is making Windows 11 a little bit worse for touch users — I hope they change this

Have you tried disabling Windows Copilot via Local Group Policy Editor > User Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Windows Copilot > Turn off Windows Copilot set to "Enabled"? I would hope that would return the notification gesture. Good to hear you use Windows in...

How to keep system and apps up to date on Windows 11

On Dell systems, Dell provides SupportAssist to update firmware, drivers, and other accessory applications. Is it necessary to use SupportAssist? Or will Windows Update (with Advanced Options for driver updates) also work?

I actually hate the new Outlook for Windows

Totally agree Zac. Outlook for Windows is a work in progress. The name that is presented in Windows "Outlook (new)" is dumb. I have to tell my wife, don't click "Outlook", click "Outlook (new)"! Performance is a real drag. The old Mail & Calendar opened in sub-second time with current mail...

HP Spectre x360 14 (2024) review: A nearly flawless traditional 2-in-1 with great battery life

This seems like a great laptop, but I won't buy it for one reason: the keyboard. You have to hit a function button to do Home, End, Page up, and Page down. These are staple keys for Windows editors that need direct access. HP used to be the hold out company that had a dedicated row of keys for...

14 features you should disable on Windows 11

When I got 23H2, I noticed that Edge was always running in the background, even when Edge was closed. This was taking considerable resources (~15% of battery). Disabling Copilot allowed the Edge processes to end when I closed Edge. This is a huge efficiency gain. Thanks.

3 reasons why AIs like Microsoft Copilot and ChatGPT have peaked, and will only get worse — and why it doesn't have to be this way

Jez, this is a really well written article that makes you think. There is also the issue of using machine learning pattern recognition for predicting the future. There has been research showing how it really is not that great. Noisy data produced under specific conditions does not forecast as...
