I just did a clean install and I have a bit more information. It didn't disappear this time until I started using Apps from the Metro part of the start menu.

I am running Windows 10 build 10049. I have a Lenovo G500S. I have the built in HD 4000 graphics with a gen 3 core I5. I lost my start menu/metro. I can right click the icon I get the full menu. I can open Cortana and use it fine. I can open the notification and get to all of the functions. It's...
