While I am not disputing that in AT&Ts situation this should be the case, for MVNOs smaller networks you are normally bringing your own settings as the phone is configuring those profiles not the sim (network+ in 8.1).
In this instance it seems a bit weird that the old phone supported the APN...
sounds like you are hitting some sort of OS bug. Try putting the phone in and out of flight mode, I vaguely remember having a similar problem on my 640 and think that was the cure
once you add it under the internet apn section in mobile & sim/sim settings it should say activated under the name. if not click it and click the apply button.

Hopefully if it is bare magnesium I can detach the kickstand and polish off the ridiculous logo though.
Does this only come in white? Is this targeted at the white watch, white sunglasses crowd?
Also why is there a garish surface logo on the kick stand? Was there a lot of confusion between the original surface and other products?
OK so I thought I would share my experience here.
I bought a 920 from a Rogers retailer in Metrotown Burnaby,BC last night.
It boots with a Rogers splash screen and says Nokia 920.3 RM - 820 Rogers on the box
